When buying or commissioning artwork consider the following:

This applies to UK law and might not be applicable to artists in other countries.

When purchasing an original piece of art or commissioning artwork it is important to establish ownership of the copyright, preferably in writing.

Even after a piece of artwork has been sold the copyright remains with the creator of the work, unless the sale included the copyright, this applies to commissioned and non-commissioned work.

This is important if you wish to own a unique piece of work with no prints being made or if the artwork is to be used commercially. You should expect to pay an additional fee for the copyright.

Note: The copyright rules are different for contributions to a collective piece of work or if the artist is an employee producing work as part of their employment.
